Crankbait bass fishing is very different than fishing with a jig. For those that have experience fishing with a jig, you know that the action of the lure is dependant on the angler. But, when bass fishing with a crankbait the action of the lure is built-in to the lure. A crankbait has a lip on the front of it. This lip, depending on the size of it, causes the lure to dive deeper into the water. Each crankbait lure has a designed depth to it. This action also helps keep the treble hooks up and away to prevent them being snagged on weeds at the bottom. Crankbaits allow the fisher to control the depth at which he/she is fishing at. So if you are fishing in water with a lot of vegetation at the bottom, then fishing crankbait to catch bass is a great option.
Bass fishing with a crankbait can take a little practice, but is very easy to get the hang of. The crankbait is cast out and then retrieved back in. Some crankbaits, depending on their weight, can be cast very far. Because of this cast and retrieve method, it allows for a lot of water to be covered when fishing. Depending on the depth of the water you are fishing, you should use a crankbait designed for that depth of water. The crankbait should be able to dive deep enough to bump along the bottom or other objects, but not drag along the bottom. This allows the lure to appear most lifelike as if it is trying to evade being prey. The method at which the crankbait is retrieved when fishing for bass is also important. You should always try to change up the retrieve speed and alternate between a slow retrieve and a quick jerk of the line. This will cause the crankbait to dart in one direction, followed by periods of slow swimming to allow for opportunities for bass to strike. Also, if the crankbait is a suspending type, you can also allow for a few seconds of suspense to allow a bass to strike between jerks.
Crankbaits are best when used with a slow action fishing rod. It will allow you to cast the lure out further distances which allows for the retrieval of the lure to cover more water. It will also prevent you from ripping the hook out of the mouth of the bass when it has been set.
Crankbaits are extremely versatile and crankbait bass fishing can be a very exciting method of fishing. Crankbaits can be fished in many different environments and if you work up a collection of different crankbaits, you can be prepared for any situation. It also allows for more interaction between the fisher and the lure and gives the fisher more involvment.
