Crappie Fishing Tips

Crappie fishing is very enjoyable and for some crappie is their ideal fish to catch. This article will help those looking for some extra crappie fishing tips to help them catch more crappie. Most people don't have access to a boat to fish from, but the good news about crappie fishing is that you don't need one. Most regions in the US have great crappie fishing locations that don't require a fishing boat. There are many lakes or large ponds that have piers that can be fished from that provides excellent crappie fishing. If you have a local bait shop, be sure to ask where some good fishing locations are in your area. Once you've found a good location where the fish are, here are some great crappie fishing tips to help you catch them.

Crappie's feed on minnows as their main diet. So when fishing with lures, you are going to want to use lures that mimic their prey. Small jigs work best. Sometimes you can even attach a live minnow to the end of a jig to provide both lure action and scent to attract the crappie's attention.

The best crappie fishing happens at night time. Fishing off of piers at night time provides for great opportunities to catch crappie. One great tip when fishing at night time is to use a light to shine near the water. You can even find crappie fishing lights for sale specifically for this purpose. The reason for doing this is that it attracts bugs close to the surface of the water. This then attracts smaller bait fish near that like the light and the bugs. Where there is bait fish, there is soon to be crappie.

As said, smaller lures work best when fishing for crappie. So when using a smaller lure, you also want to be sure that your hook size matches as well. Generally a hook size of #8 and 10 works best and is small enough to not be noticed much by the crappie. If you are attaching live bait to a lure, then try and use two hooks. One to hook the live bait to and another trailing to increase your hook rate.

One final tip for catch crappie is that they are often nicknamed "papermouths". This is for a reason. Their mouths are very fragile. So when hooking a lure into a crappie, be very gentle with the tugs with the rod or you will rip the lure right out of the crappie's mouth. Being gentle will not only help you catch more crappie, but will also prevent harm from coming to the fish if you plan on release it back.

While some people catch certain kinds of fish for the sport of the catch or the beauty of fish, crappie fishing is all about the dinner catch. Crappie are known for being one of the best tasting panfish around. Hopefully these crappie fishing tips here will help you fill your dinner plate!
