Many anglers enjoy going after this game fish. Sometimes know as the bluegill but also goes under other names, for example, sunfish, bream and brim. A very popular fish amongst anglers and can be found in ponds, streams and lakes.
The bluegill has some traits that will be known amongst the expert angler, however, for those that aren't I will run through some in this article.
The angler can identify the bluegill by looking for it's characteristic blue gill flap, hence the name. Once a bluegill has been landed you will, most likely, see either an orangey or predominately yellow under belly. The male of the species is generally more orange when the female is more yellow. This can be useful should you need to determine the sex of your catch.
The bluegill prefers the calm areas of the body of water in which they live. This, not only, offers the fish some shelter but offers a degree of protection from any would be attackers. For lunch, well for any meal time, the bluegill likes to eat bugs and crustaceans, having said that, they will have a crack at many varieties of bait and lure that a fisher mans cares to throw at them, they are not too fussy. This fish tends to lurk near the shore which makes them ideal for bank or shore fishing. In terms of size, the bluegill, will grow to around 5lbs.
For catching bluegills, as mentioned earlier, they tend to stay close to the shore and in calmer and more sheltered water, so these are the areas the angler should focus on in order to get the best results. You should bait your hook with artificial flies and jigs, worms or crickets. Probably one of the best areas to catch the bluegill is a pond. A pond is where you may find the most concentration of this species.
In summary then, the bluegill is a popular game fish that is reasonable easy to catch in ponds or relatively calm areas of a body of water, for example, streams and small lakes. The shoreline is the area where they tend to gather.
The bluegill makes an ideal beginners fish due to the relative simplicity of catching them.
